Nite Ize make a reliable line of miniature carabiners (“S-biners”) which we’ve had attached to our keys for a while now. How will their key tool fare in the battle of the ultra-mini multitools?
There wasn’t much to like about the Swiss Tech Utili-key and it didn’t make it into our daily keyring. The latest contender is the cleverly-named DoohicKey from Nite Ize.
The tool comes with cardboard backing, allowing you to immediately get a feel for the tool. It’s not the best for gift packaging, but is much better than a plastic blister pack. All OK so far. We’re offered the following tools: box cutter, bottle opener, wrench, ruler, and flat head screwdriver. Because there’s no cutting blade, the tool is claimed to be TSA/airport friendly. Certainly, there’s nothing sharp on the tool. Let’s see how it works in practice.
Despite there being no real cutting blade, the box cutter works surprisingly well. It’s got just enough of a point to easily make it’s way through Amazon-style packaging. but because it isn’t a traditional cutting blade, there’s no worry that you might stab yourself in the leg while carrying your keys. Thumbs up!
The bottle opener works and is reasonably comfortable to use. No complaints, although nothing spectacular here.
The wrench is a basic affair, with a half-hex cut-out in the centre of the tool. You’re not going to get a great amount of use out of this, but it works adequately enough and is a decent use of space.
This is surprisingly handy and is accurate on our tool (we’ve heard some complains about inaccurate measurements). A thoroughly worthwhile inclusion.
Flat Head Screwdriver
The screwdriver head is very large which means you’re not going to be adjusting anything small with this tool. However, the size does mean it’s easier to unscrew things than with some of the small tools because gripping is very easy. So, we have ease of use but a potentially limited range of uses. This one is a mixed bag.
Of course, there’s always the carabiner itself. It’s actually a very clever way to attach the tool to a key ring and is useful in its own right. It’s extremely easy to remove the tool from keys, and this can be accomplished one-handed. Excellent!
Nite Ize have a made a number of decisions about the design of their tool, and most of them pay off. Despite its size, the tool is comfortable to use and everything included has its place and functions well enough. They’ve also avoided trying to cram too much into the tool (and potentially having a bunch of not very effective tools). So, we really can’t fault the Doohickey. It’s very small and light, and has thus made it onto our daily keyring. If you’re comparing this to the Swiss Tech Utili-key, there is absolutely no contest. Recommended!
